Driven by the proliferation of heterogeneous bandwidth-consuming services, passive optical network (PON) architectures have been evolving in the last decade, providing enhanced availability, data rates and services. An evidence of this fast evolution is that both IEEE 802.3 and ITU-T together with the Full Services Access Network (FSAN) group have been working towards the standardization of next-generation PON (NG-PON2 and XGS-PON). Several access technologies are currently deployed in the field, namely, EPON, 10GEPON, BPON, GPON, XG-PON and the choices have been to evolve from the legacy systems without discontinuity of the previous technologies, in other words maintaining coexistence over the same fiber span to further exploit the investment.
