It’s a 100% portuguese technology and it’s the result of PT’s engineering capability. NG-PON2, technology developed by Altice Labs which allows high download and upload speeds, was distinguished with an honorable mention in the Internet category, at Exame Informática Awards. To Alexandre Fonseca, Chief Technology Officer, this is the recognition of one of the main strategic landmarks of the company, innovation.

When entering Luiz Vasconcellos auditorium, in Paço de Arcos, a robot, a booth with drones and virtual reality glasses brings our attention to the fact that an event dedicated to science and technology is about to begin.

In its 8th consecutive year, Exame Informática awards distinguish professionals, companies and products that have made a difference in Portugal and worldwide.

Among the best is NG-PON2 which won an honorable mention in the internet category. Alexandre Fonseca, PT CTO, went on stage to receive the award and emphasized the importance of this recognition. “It’s, without a doubt, a strong motivation to keep on going, not only developing this line of products, which are one of the focal areas at Altice Labs, but also other products in different areas such as e-health, 5G, mobility and smart cities.”

For Alexandre Fonseca, this honorable mention is also the recognition of PT’s professionals’ capabilities. “This award is, above all, a reward to our engineers’ for their performance and also a motivation to pursue innovating. Not only for the purpose of innovation by itself but innovation that will generate revenues for Altice Labs and Portugal Telecom.

Developed in Altice Labs, NG-PON2 runs in the physical structures of PT, coexisting with GPON technology (Gigabit Passive Optical Network) and without the need for additional investments.

Besides significantly increasing bandwidth, this technology brings symmetry to a massive access network, providing the same content download and upload speed.
