The new Altice Labs’ Hub in Algarve was inaugurated in Olhao on the 12th of May, and continues to support the strategy of linking regions and territory through the development of projects of local interest that may be expanded to other geographies.
Alexandre Fonseca, Executive Chairman of Altice Portugal, pointed out Olhao as “one of the first municipalities to believe in this project and to want to be part of this innovation network” that Altice Labs has been creating in close collaboration with academia.
In collaboration with the University of Algarve, the RETINA project was established which aims to create an infrastructure (based on an instrumented aquarium) and a system to characterize fish, creating image databases that can be used to train Artificial Intelligence algorithms, also involving Machine Learning. In this way, it is possible to automatically identify the species and make an estimate of the characteristics of fish in aquaculture, facilitating an analysis that is currently performed by divers, through a time-consuming and costly procedure.
Alcino Lavrador, General Manager of Altice Labs, made a point of introducing the 4 employees already working at the new Olhao hub, stating that, to him, the word of the day is “comply”. “To comply with the commitment we have assumed in valuing the regions. Investing in local value, on the brains of the region and fix the population “, this was the motto left.
