The year 2020 represents the general launch of 5G in Europe, a process that will enable Europeans to take advantage of the benefits of using 5G; but what can 5G do for local communities?
On the 7th of December, an online session was held on the theme “5G Users Forum: Empowering EU Smart Cities”, promoted by the European Association of Telecommunication Network Operators (ETNO), to allow speakers and participants to exchange views on what 5G can do for Europeans in a Smart City. Francisco Fontes, from the Technology and Innovation Strategy department of Altice Labs, participated as a speaker and shared his perspective on 5G and Altice Labs’ vision on the use of 5G in this context, highlighting the Aveiro Steam City project.
Francisco Fontes also described the 5G networks used in the Aveiro Tech City Living Lab (one of the main axes of the Aveiro Steam City project), their performance levels and how their use is managed. He finished his presentation with the challenges of 5G in Aveiro and how this technology will be implemented in the city of Aveiro with the support of Altice Labs and other entities, thus providing a technological revolution, with the adoption of new 5G and IoT (Internet of Things) infrastructures and technologies in Aveiro, with the aim of improving people’s lives in the cities.
