The Broadband World Forum (BBWF), considered one of the largest annual events for telecommunications, took place between the 24th to 26th October in Berlin. This event attracted over 9.000 executives and featured more than 100 exhibitors and technology suppliers.

Altice Labs was at BBWF to give greater visibility to its products through its participation with a booth in order to promote solutions supported by PON technologies (GPON and NG-PON2).

PON technologies offer a set of advantages to operators in comparison to other access technologies such as reducing megabit cost on access, reducing the cost of implementing broadband networks, reducing the space occupied by the equipment in the central offices and eliminating the need for active equipment in the external network and the respective energy supply.

The NG-PON2 technology provides even more bandwidth coexisting in the same infrastructure of the external network and allowing on the one hand the increase the number of users connected at home and on the other the increase of the bandwidth of each user. In addition, NG-PON2 technology introduces fundamental protection mechanisms for some business services.

In this context, the most recent solutions for telecommunications operators central offices (OLT) and customer home stations (ONT), supported by the latest NG-PON2 technology, were presented.

José Miguel Santos, representing  Altice Labs’  Business Development direction, emphasizes the  interest shown in our technology and solutions, especially NG-PON2, and the exchange of contacts .

In addition to the booth space, Cláudio Rodrigues, from Altice Labs’ Network Systems Development direction, participated in a panel discussion on “Innovations and Leading Technologies in the FTTx space”. In this panel, it was discussed that the future of FTTx networks cannot be seen only as a residential solution, but as a true multiple access to services. In the era of Gigabit, PON technologies, namely XGS-PON and NG-PON2 will coexist with GPON, each with an important role for different types of residential services, for SMEs and for mobile backhaul.

It is also worth mentioning a presentation by Paulo Mão-Cheia, from the same direction, in the context of ”NG-PON2 Council of the Broadband Forum” on the support technologies to NG-PON2. The presentation described the various options that exist, in terms of equipment and passive components implementation to support the mass deployment of NG-PON2, as well as the advantages that operators can derive from the use of this technology.
