5G-based autonomous driving technology to support communication between vehicles and communication between vehicles and road infrastructures will improve the experience in people transportation, with an emphasis on truly autonomous driving, increased safety, traffic efficiency and better entertainment, thus opening up a wide range of business opportunities for car manufacturers, mobile communications operators, road infrastructure operators, technology companies and service providers.

Led by Altice Labs and in partnership with Allbesmart, the Polytechnic Institute of Castelo Branco and MRN (GlobalVia), the 5G-AUTO project started in January 2021. Funded by P2020, it aims to develop services based on artificial intelligence to support the prevention of road accidents, both in urban and motorway environments. The services will be supported on innovative hardware and software solutions contributing to the development of safe autonomous driving.

Altice Labs will develop a crucial component for autonomous driving, called RSU – Road Side Unit – responsible for communicating with the Traffic Management Centre and with the vehicles directly.
