Organized by InvestBraga, the 6th edition of Economy Week took place from May 22nd to 26th. This year, the edition was dedicated to research and technology transfer – the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on the companies’ competitiveness.

On May 25th, a conference was held on “The impact of artificial intelligence on knowledge”, which was promoted by CNN Portugal and moderated by journalist Francisco David Ferreira. The participants of the conference were Alcino Lavrador, general manager of Altice Labs,; Jorge Portugal, executive director of COTEC; Carlos Oliveira, president of the José Neves Foundation; and Marco António Silva, from Microsoft.

Alcino Lavrador addressed the main accelerators of companies’ AI adoption, as week as its impact on teaching and training. Altice Labs’ general manager also spoke about the main risks of using this tool, since it complements and enhances human capacity, but does not replace it yet.

Alcino Lavrador addressed several other factors to be taken into consideration when discussing this topic. The factors addressed were ethics, bias, transparency, explainability and source origin, accuracy and reliability of algorithms and training models, as well as the need to be able to audit algorithms, and the necessity to have a legal framework to enable responsibilities to be determined in the event of serious erros.

The conference ended with the Secretary of State for Higher Education, Pedro Nuno Teixeira.
