In a celebration full of innovation, technology and thinking about the future, the Aveiro campus of Altice Labs celebrated, on the 31st of May, the six years of life of the Innovation, Research and Development Center of the Altice Group. “Wellness and digital health” was the motto of this anniversary that was marked by the existence of several technological proposals for the future of this sector.

Alcino Lavrador, General Manager of Altice Labs; Ana Figueiredo, CEO of Altice Portugal and Alexandre Fonseca, Co-CEO of the Altice Group, were the hosts of this event which was also attended by the Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education, Elvira Fortunato; the Mayor of Aveiro, Ribau Esteves; Isabel Rocha, Vice-Rector of NOVA University; Pedro Gouveia, Dr. Surgeon of the Breast Unit of the Champalimaud Clinical Center; and Margarida França, President of the Management Board of the Baixo Vouga Hospital Center.

In the protocol session, which took place in the morning, real-time demonstrations were carried out that allow health monitoring. Highlights included the potential of “Medigraf Augmented Telemedicine” by showing the perspective of a specialist doctor when using it during a teleconsultation to perform an ultrasound; the use of 5G technology in surgeries performed remotely; SmartAL, an assisted living platform that provides a remote monitoring service for chronically ill or elderly patients and the use of AI/machine learning (ML) techniques in the diagnosis of ocular pathologies.

In the words of Alcino Lavrador, boldness is what characterizes Altice Labs. “Since our beginning, in 1950, we dared to develop more advanced telecommunications technologies in Portugal. We dare to challenge the limits. We dare to do more and better than many multinationals with more means. We dared to innovate. We dare to offer a better life for people”, he praised.
