The 5G Mirror Platform and the 5G Mobilizer project, led by Altice Labs, organized a workshop “5G: from deployment to exploitation” on the 25th May in the Creative Science Park.
The 5G Mirror Platform is an integral part of the ÁGORA Project included in the Support System for Collective Actions and is co-financed by the Compete2020 Programme of Portugal 2020 under the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
The 5G Mobilizer project, part of the Business Incentive System, Research and Technological Development, Mobilizing Programmes, has an overall investment of 9.720.000 euros, being co-financed in the amount of 6.162.000 euros by Lisboa 2020 and COMPETE 2020, of Portugal 2020, in the context of the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
5G technology, defined by 3GPP, represents a breakthrough in technology, enabling even faster communications (in speed and response time), reliable and with less power consumption. In addition to this evolution from a performance standpoint, the 5G is distinguished by the application of new concepts in its architecture, leading to greater flexibility and agility.
Thus, with a single cellular mobile communications technology, it will be possible to support a large number of services, including massive, industrial and critical IoT, as well as richer multimedia communications, integrating augmented and virtual reality.
In this context, there’s a huge expectation around the 5G, and a great social and economic impact is expected, by “connecting people, things, data, applications, transport systems and cities in an environment of intelligent network communications” (ITU-T ).
The main purpose of the workshop was to promote, at the national level, a discussion on the guidelines for this entry into production and how some industries can explore their most distinguishing characteristics. The subject and the programme presented generated a great deal of interest, with 160 registered applications, far beyond the available facilities.
The programme included interventions by the academy, the main manufacturers in Portugal, operators and different entities with an interest in new communication systems. Worthy of note were two international contributions on security problems and the radio.
