Passive Backscatter Sensors for Internet of Things applications

Ricardo Correia – Universidade de Aveiro

This project consists of the development of battery-free sensors charged by wireless power transmission, which transfer the data by backscatter communication (it uses one frequency for transferring data and one frequency for receiving energy from transmitters). The passive sensor allows to collect and transfer data continuously, whenever requested by the reader.

ARGIS – Augmented Reality for Geographical Information Systems

Tiago Ferreira Alves – Instituto Politécnico de Castelo Branco

ARGIS (Augmented Reality for Geographical Information Systems) is a mixed-reality holographic GIS application where the utility assets appear in the field of view as 3D holograms. It allows an improvement from 60% to 80% in the required time for asset location, validation and update.

CityMetric

Pedro Marcelino – Instituto Superior Técnico
Juan Pablo Correia – Universidade do Algarve

The project CityMetric uses IoT devices, such as drones and smartphones, to collect asset data and feed an artificial intelligence powered cloud system that monitors the infrastructures, predicts their future condition, and supports decision-making on maintenance activities. The result is a frictionless digital platform that provides a centralized view of assets performance, improves their condition assessment and extends its lifespan, thus contributing to solve the problem of civil infrastructure asset management.
