Altice Labs, in collaboration with its project partners, has concluded the European project DISCRETION, a strategic initiative under the European Defence Industrial Development Programme (EDIDP) and the European Defence Fund (EDF), focused on strengthening the security and resilience of military communications in complex tactical scenarios.
Our contribution focused on developing a Software-Defined Network (SDN) for Software-Defined Radios (SDR), capable of delivering secure, resilient, and autonomous communications in highly demanding environments. This cutting-edge solution integrates Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) – a disruptive technology that protects communications against current and future threats, including those posed by the post-quantum era.
“The success of the DISCRETION project is a demonstration that Altice Labs’ innovation can play an important role in the increasingly important context of European defense,” highlights Rui Calé, Senior Consultant at Altice Labs.
The DISCRETION project was coordinated by Portugal, with participation from partners in Spain, Italy, and Austria, marking the first nationally coordinated project under both the EDIDP and EDF. The technology developed by Altice Labs and the consortium has already been successfully demonstrated in Portugal, at the Instituto de Telecomunicações in Aveiro, in Brussels, at Portugal’s Permanent Representation to the EU – REPER, and in Spain, at the FEINDEF 2025 exhibition. Despite the project’s conclusion, further invitations for demonstrations are already underway, reflecting the relevance and impact of the solution.
The official closing ceremony took place on June 6, at the Military Academy in Lisbon, gathering consortium members, representatives from the European Commission, military entities, and other key stakeholders.
This project reinforces Altice Labs’ position as a leading provider of mission-critical technology solutions, and highlights the ongoing innovation driven by its teams. Through initiatives like DISCRETION, Altice Labs continues to stand at the forefront of technological transformation in support of security, connectivity, and Europe’s digital future.
