The National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI) granted a new patent to Altice Labs in July 2024: an innovative software component that allows the dynamic distribution and adaptation of load limits across various individual interfaces for receiving service events in a data processing system, such as the Online Charging System (OCS).

This component was developed in 2020 by Luís Azevedo and Pedro Salazar from the Business and Operations Support Systems department, José António Almeida from the Global Business Development department, and João Pedro Rodrigues, a former Altice Labs collaborator. The associated algorithm deterministically ensures the prevention of system overload, guaranteeing that the system’s total processing capacity is not exceeded and allowing for effective utilization of all available capacity by redistributing excess capacity across all necessary interfaces.

In the event of imminent overload, the algorithm calculates which interfaces should discard requests and by how much, ensuring this is done proportionally and according to configurable criteria, such as guaranteed capacity, minimum capacity, and priority, among others.

This achievement consolidates Altice Labs’ position as a leader in technological innovation, highlighting its ongoing commitment to research and development of advanced solutions. With 61 patent applications in progress, Altice Labs demonstrates a strong commitment to protecting and developing its technological innovations. This approach not only reinforces Altice Labs’ current market competitiveness but also underscores the importance of intellectual property valuation to ensure innovations are protected and the company can capitalize on its creations, ensuring a return on investment in innovation and fostering technological advancement in the telecommunications sector.
