Altice Labs strengthens its position in developing innovative solutions by successfully testing, in May 2024, a voice call over a private 5G network.
The inaugural call took place at Altice Labs’ facilities in Aveiro, made between two mobile devices, an iPhone and an Android device, connected exclusively by the campus’s private 5G network, following the StandAlone (SA) model. Using the Voice Over New Radio (VoNR) standard, the call demonstrated superior voice quality and low latency, highlighting how private 5G networks can drive industry and transform the future of industrial and corporate connectivity. To achieve this, the 5G platform was extended to support interactive multimedia services.
The implementation of private 5G networks allows companies to fully control their networks, ensuring greater reliability, total confidentiality, and security of their information, as well as lower latency and higher bandwidth compared to public networks or Wi-Fi networks. All these characteristics are crucial for verticals in production, logistics, mining, healthcare, and energy sectors where availability, reliability, and data security are paramount.
With the completion of this first voice call, Altice Labs reinforces its position at the forefront of technological innovation, showcasing the revolutionary role of private 5G networks in the future of connectivity and operational efficiency of companies.
Altice Labs’ private 5G network in Aveiro serves as a testbed for the development and demonstration of products and services that utilize advanced 5G functionalities.
