The trainee will be integrated in the Management and Control embedded software for network devices development team, with focus for the G.fast and xPON technologies product lines.
The proposed project envisages the research, design and development of all required SW components to enhance our product lines with a Openflow interface according with the SDN vision.
The proposed Project is part of the Connectivity working group activities, where complete solutions for access, aggregation and transport networks are development, starting with PCB design up to the centralized management & operations platforms. ALB is actively developing the NG-PON2 technology being a pioneer in the industry.
New network paradigms such as SDN/NFV are pushing a significant part of the internal logic of network elements towards external general purposed, software based, computation platforms. These platforms could be dedicated servers or even virtual servers. Openflow is based on a set of configuration and control primitives for network devices operations. With these primitives any network complex behavior is, in theory, possible to be programmed. New network functions could easily be developed using such primitives without the need of any upgrade in the devices themselves achieving the promise of Software Defined Networks.
The purpose of this project is to acquire knowledge in such concepts and to evaluate and design a proper evolution strategy for our product line, guarantying a sooner openflow support. Opensource tools working as SDN controllers are to be used during this research (opendaylight, ONOS) to speed up the development of the identified network functions over openflow.
