The technologies generally known as Software Defined Networking (SDN) have gained increasing attention and support from the telecommunications industry in the last few years. The main motivation for this evolution is the need to make networks ready to cope with the new requirements of agility, elasticity and mobility, which to a large extent have been created by the widespread use of virtualization technologies.
The goal of the proposed activity is the exploration of SDN technologies to implement and demonstrate proofs of concept of programmable networking, enabling innovative network applications and services. In particular, the concept of "network slicing", as a key building block of 5G network architecture should deserve special attention.
The objective of this work is the implementation, validation and demonstration of network applications and proofs of concept taking advantage of SDN technologies and network programmability. Two possible application areas are dynamic connectivity (e.g. inter-CPE connectivity, bandwidth on demand) and network slicing (especially with a view to the evolution towards 5G network environments). The activity will include tasks such as:
Technology and Innovation Coordination
