NFV and Virtual Network Functions as a Service (VNFaaS)

Context

Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) is an emerging concept that means the migration of network functionalities, traditionally executed in specific hardware appliances, to virtualized IT infrastructures, thus enabling the conditions for operators to offer virtualized network functions (VNF) to end users, as an added value service, complementary to connectivity services, following the “as-a-Service” model popularized by Cloud technologies (VNFaaS). This means that network functions such as gateways, proxies, firewalls, transcoders, analyzers, can be provided on demand as a service, without the need to acquire, install and mantain specialized hardware. The goal of this project is to develop, experiment and evaluate VNFaaS use cases, taking advantage of the Altice Labs experimental NFV plataform.
