Currently, when the telecom industry walks towards 5G, mobile networks utilization keeps increasing with regards to fixed technologies, since it allows the user access to applications and services with stringent requirements, e.g. video streaming or augmented reality, with higher commodity. In 5G, the high bandwidth and ultra-low latencies are, among others, two of the key objectives to achieve. Considering that there are physical constraints to achieve those, the solution is to deploy services closer to the end users, reduncing the distance.
It is in this context that the Edge Computing concept come out, which intends to deploy cloud infrastructure and execution platforms in the edge of the network (close to the end user), to deploy services (eventually from OTTs) in unique conditions; and, for that, telecommunications operators are in a privileged position. It is expected that as telecom operators offer such kind of capabilities, new and more stringent services will appear, taking advantage of such unique conditions.
In late 2014, ETSI has created the MEC (Mobile Edge Computing) working group (as an ISG), with the mission to standardize a framework that allows the creation of services in the edge of mobile networks (concept that can be further extended to fixed networks). This framework must provide the capabilities to dynamically manage services, namely creating, migrating and eliminating those services, according to the user requirements, thus providing an exceptional quality of experience for the users.
This way, this project will contribute to the development of a Mobile Edge Computing server prototype, by designing and implementing the MEC framework according to the ETSI MEC specifications.
