Network Element Emulation

Context

The trainee will be integrated in the Management and Control embedded software for network devices development team, with focus for the G.fast and xPON technologies product lines.
The proposed project envisages the research, design and development of network devices emulation tools. These emulators will assist both early SW development (prior to the physical existence of the new devices) as well as test and demonstration scenarios.

Project objectives

The proposed Project is part of the Connectivity working group activities, where complete solutions for access, aggregation and transport networks are development, starting with PCB design up to the centralized management & operations platforms. ALB is actively developing the NG-PON2 technology being a pioneer in the industry.
Technologies lifecycle becomes shorter every day affecting the development processes and pushing the need for optimization. Parallel development is a must but SW components are often dependent on the availability of the physical network devices under development. Since the current SW architecture is layered, as long as each layer exposes a working interface with the defined behavior, the adjacent layers could be developed and tested on their own. The purpose of emulation tools is to mimic such behaviors allowing for SW development (prior to the arrival of the first physical prototypes and reducing the number of lab prototypes, therefore development costs). This strategy is also helpful for (remote) demonstration purposes since they avoid the need of a physical network of devices. The purpose of this project is to study, design and implement such network devices emulator, making it flexible to support new behavior on a single version.
