Context
The mobile network architecture evolution and more challenging requirements (bit rate, delays,...) cannot be efficiently supported by existing fronthault interfaces (eg CPRI - Common Public Radio Interface). New emerging architecture and protocols to address the 5G requirements over fronthaul/backhaul C-RAN (Cloud - Radio Aceess Network) with PON (passive optical Netwok) infrastruture coexistence (ex. GPON, NGPON2) aligned with standards evolution in fixed-mobile convergence scenario.
Project objectives
- State of the art on new emerging architectures, protocols and main requirements for next mobile networks (5G and beyond) and current C-RAN demonstrator based on CPRI protocol.
- Study of NGFI - Next Generation Fronthaul Interface in accordance to IEEE P1914.1.
- Contribution on the mobile fronthaul architecture specification on both data and control plane including management.
- Contribution to evolve the fronthaul architecture and protocol in the current demosntrator.
- Proof of concept and final resuts.
Key skills required
- Next Generation (5G) Mobile network architecture and protocols namely for fronthaul/backhaul.
- FTTx PON (passive optical access netwoks) namely NGPON2.
- 3GPP standards.
- Radio over fiber.
- Software defined Radio.
- LINUX, C++ and FPGA programming.
