"NFV: Standardization and activities at Altice Labs" was the theme of the 94th Tech Day held last March 20 at Altice Labs.

Following the usual welcome note, José Cabaça began by providing a small tutorial on NFV, followed by a global view of the Standardization Organizations (SOs) and Open Source Communities (OSCs) that have been working on this area. António Gamelas made a detailed summary of what has been the activities of ETSI ISG NFV, reference organization in which Network Function Virtualization (NFV) concerns.

Given the undeniable importance and impact of the NFV in Altice Labs' work areas, a summary of the way the theme is being addressed in the various directions was made: Rui Calé addressed the H2020 5G-PPP Selfnet and Slicenet projects; Carlos Marques explained how Open Source Mano (OSM) has been used as an orchestrator of virtual machines and containers through virtual infrastructure manager (multi-VIM), within the scope of the H2020 5G-PPP Superfluidity project; André Brízido addressed how the NFV has contributed to the evolution of the OLT in virtualized environments; followed by Gonçalo Gaspar with the integration of an NFV orchestrator (NFVO) into the NOSSIS fullfillment environment.

The session ended with 2 presentations, the first being assured by Miguel Santos, who presented the benefits of crossing NFV with Policy and Charging Rules Function (PCRF), a key part of Altice Labs' planned Policy Management solution. The last one was in charge of José Bonnet and Alberto Rocha, which focused on the development and validation of software for NFV using, for this purpose, the work done in the projects H2020 5G-PPP SONATA and 5GTANGO.
